WEAVING + EMBROIDERY
Strands of color combining to mirror the symbols of nature
WEAVING VISIONS ALIVE
The process of creating these fine weavings and intricately stitched embroidery is not only time-consuming but also profoundly spiritual. Essential aspects of the Wixárika people's artistic expression; each piece deeply ties their spiritual and cultural practices together.
Weaving is typically done on backstrap looms, producing textiles such as belts, shawls, and tapestries, often featuring vibrant geometric patterns and symbols representing their connection to nature and the cosmos. Traditional embroidery, on the other hand, uses only hand needlework. Meticulous technique allows the artists to decorate clothing, ceremonial bags, and other items with bright, intricate stitching.
The colors and patterns are chosen with great care, as they hold sacred meanings and are believed to carry protective and healing properties. Each woven or embroidered piece is crafted with intention, reflecting the artist's deep connection to their community, tradition, and spiritual beliefs. These textiles have not only remained vital within Wixárika culture but have also earned recognition globally for their rich symbolism and artistry.
