Handmade indigenous artwork from the Wixárika (Huichol Tribe)
This one-of-a-kind yarn painting is crafted by the visionary Wixárika artist and mara-akame (shaman), Eligio Carrillo. Eligio’s yarn paintings hold profound spiritual significance, serving as Nierikas, or sacred doorways to the divine—each piece is a passage into the spiritual world as envisioned by the shaman.
Artist's Description: This nierika (doorway) depicts the pilgrimage during which offerings are made with the faith of receiving blessings and finding the hikuri (peyote) hiding the secrets of creation. Leaving offerings of candles and prayer arrows, the pilgrims yearn to learn from the mountain of the sun. Throughout the day and into the night, they travel into the nierika (doorway) to find guidance and wisdom. Each person’s doorway is unique, offering different insights and lessons, but all connecting with the light of creation and Tate-Wari (Grandfather Fire). Each year, the shamans travels to this place and return in ceremony to call upon the kupuri (energy) of this sacred land where the hikuri (peyote) was born. To continue learning, the shaman returns to Wirikuta (the sacred land of peyote) on pilgrimage and in ceremony again and again.
